Cairns to host QLD hockey cup

Veteran hockey teams from across the State will meet in Cairns next June to battle for the right to represent Queensland nationally.

Cairns Regional Council will host the Veterans Men State Hockey Championships as a three day event.

State teams will compete for a winning title as well as vie for selection in Queensland representative teams for National Competitions in October 2011.

Mayor Val Schier said hosting the championship fit perfectly with Council’s new Events Strategy, a formulated plan targeted at attracting major events to the region.

“Council hosting this sporting event showcases Cairns as a major national sports event venue,” Cr Schier said.

“It brings to the region another state championship and gives the community an opportunity to enjoy live sport up close and personal.

“These are veteran players who will no doubt bring their families along for a holiday.  This type of championship highlights Cairns as a sports tourism destination.”

Hockey Queensland General Manager Garry West-Bail said Cairns Regional Council has been a great supporter of hockey in the past.

“We are pleased to be able to bring this event to Cairns and with it business to local hotels, restaurants and clubs,” Mr West-Bail said.

“We are very sure this event will be a great success.”

The Men’s Veteran Hockey Championships are scheduled to be played on the new synthetic pitch at the Cairns Hockey Association Fields in June next year.
