Parkinson’s support now in Port

The newly established Port Douglas/Mossman Support Group held their first meeting in September which was welcomed by the local community.

The group has been established for people with Parkinson’s, carers, family and friends.

The first meeting was a great success with future meetings being held on the last Monday of the month. The next meeting is scheduled for 25 October at 10.00am and will be held monthly at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre.

Support group coordinator, James Watson, was pleased with the success of the first meeting and is looking forward to future meetings and welcoming new people to the group.

"We are filling a need in the community," Mr Watson said. "We are in touch with the Mitchelton/Bribie Island and Caboulture Groups who are supporting us in advice needed to make a success  of this Group here."

Currently there is no known cause or cure for Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative neurological condition typically presenting with symptoms such as slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, instability and tremor which affects up to 80,000 Australians.

Support groups are run by volunteer coordinators throughout Queensland and provide friendship, emotional and practical support with people facing similar challenges allowing everyone to share feelings, resources and experiences.

Parkinson's Queensland Inc. is a statewide non-for-profit community organisation supporting individuals, families and carers affected by Parkinson's disease.

It provides information, education, awareness and support and also raises money for research. The organisation currently facilitates over 25 support groups throughout Queensland.
