Douglas Shire Meals on Wheels will receive a much needed funding boost of $34,156 to purchase kitchen equipment, and to help the organisation deliver even better services to the Mossman and Port Douglas area.
“This is a win for the organisation and for the local residents who rely on its services,” Member for Cook, Jason O’Brien said.
“I’ve got no doubt that Douglas Meals on Wheels will put these extra funds to good use and that local residents will benefit.”
Disability Services Minister Anastacia Palaszczuk made the announcement at the Meals on Wheels Queensland State Conference in Brisbane last week.
The support is part of a $770,000 funding boost to 38 Meals on Wheels organisations across Queensland.
Minister Palaszczuk said Meals on Wheels was one of the best known community organisations in Queensland.
“Meals on Wheels has 14,000 volunteers in Queensland who deliver 2.1 million meals a year,” she said.
Douglas Shire Meals on Wheels coordinator, Steve MacRae, said the service has strong links to the community.
"Meals on Wheels is a litmus test for the community. When the community is doing well, Meals on Wheels does well.
"It's very much a community based service and if the community wants us we'll survive, and if they don't, we won't."
Douglas Shire Meals on Wheels currently has around 20 volunteers and deliver up to 50 meals per day.
Mr MacRae said there were three ways people could support Meals on Wheels, as a volunteer kitchen hand or delivery driver, through making a donation, and becoming a client.
