Council turns pink for cancer awareness

Cairns Regional Council will think pink in October to support Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Mayor Val Schier said “There are some sobering breast cancer statistics. Approximately 125 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the far north each year.

“I understand nationally about 1% of those affected are men. Women are no longer alone in suffering from the disease.

“For many of us breast cancer awareness has become a personal cause because we know someone who as been affected by the disease -a family member, a friend or a colleague.

“To raise awareness of preventative measures, we are asking everyone to think pink for this month and perhaps donate to help raise funds for cancer research.”

In the Cairns and Mossman administration buildings and depots, Council staff have ‘pinked’ their work places with decorations that will remain in place for the month.

“Staff in Mossman will join local cancer awareness group Pink in the Tropics for their own Think Pink celebration on Friday morning. Everyone, including men, has been invited to wear pink for the day.”
