Cairns Regional Council has given approval for residential homes to available for short term letting in what they describe as providing a "clear direction" on holiday rental accommodation. 

Council has amended the definition of ‘house’ under the Cairns Plan and the Douglas Planning Scheme to make it clear that the short term letting of a house is considered appropriate.

Mayor Val Schier said the change will allow owners of residential houses occupied part time, to rent the house when they were absent.

“This change serves several purposes. It will increase accommodation for families who require or want that kind of holiday. 

"The amendment recognises that part time residents may wish to rent their home when they are not personally using it and perhaps defray the cost of retaining the property,” Cr Schier said.

The amendment is subject to approval by the State, and would allow up to six unrelated people to be accommodated in a single house.

The Douglas Shire Planning Scheme currently contains that description.

“This amendment aims to support the region’s capacity for long term growth as it supports local investment and employment and the regional tourism economy,” Cr Schier said.
