Charity begins at home

 

There are a number of worthy causes that need our support, be they of a local, national, or global level. 

Unfortunately, recent times have given us too many opportunities to show how our community unites when tragedy strikes. And we can't forget the day to day efforts of the tireless volunteers of local organisations such as SANDS or KIND.

Whether you've been personally affected or just sympathetic to the cause, here are some upcoming events you can get behind in our own community.





Who: SANDS (Stillbirth and neonatal death support group)
What: A walk to remember. Participants will meet at the Pirate Ship at the northern end of Cairns Esplanade and, after a name reading ceremony, will take a short walk to the jetty and release a balloon to remember our children.
When: Sunday, 17 October from 9am.

Who: KIND (Kids In Need of Donations)
What: Charity Golf Day. Teams of four take part in an ambrose competition at Mossman Golf Club. There are lots of great prizes to be won.
When: Sunday, 17 October at 12 noon.

Who: KIND (Kids In Need of Donations)
What: 'Look who's got talent'. Event organisers are holding auditions for anyone who can sing, dance, juggle, jump, or joke. Audience members are also more than welcome for the Grand Final.
When: Saturday, 23 October at the Clink Theatre from 9am to 4pm. Grand Final from 6.30pm.
Entry: Students are $5 each or $10 for a group, and in the over 18's, $10 for individuals and $20 or a group. Audience tickets available at $20 for adults, $10 for children, or $40 for a family.

Who: KIND - A Girl's Night In for Evie Shaw
What: Raising money for the Shaw family at the Court House Hotel. Champagne, canapes, Zumba dancing, fashion parade, and prizes to be won.
When: Saturday, 23 October at 6.30pm.

Who: Whitelion. A not-for-profit organisations who supports young people to build better lives for themselves, and helps make our community a more inclusive and safer place.
What: Whitelion invite you to ride along where the rainforest meets the reef. Riders will have the option of riding the full 180km road course, or riding 90km's to Cape Tribulation and being transported back to the Port Douglas Surf Club.

Who: Cancer Council Queensland
What: Girl's Night In. A national fundraising activity held by the Cancer Council each year to raise vital funds for research into women’s cancers and patient support services. Invite your girlfriends over for a night in, and ask your guests to donate what they would have spent on a night out, to Cancer Council Queensland.
When: All through October.
Entry: Free. All donations to Cancer Council Queensland

Who: Movember
What: Men sporting Movember moustaches, known as Mo Bros, become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.
When: All through November.
