Ask not what the Clink can do for you

by Claire Tierney

Welcome to the Clink theatre a fascinating building where even more captivating action happens on the stage. Only in this historical building can the story behind its inception be as interesting as the stories told on stage.

Where else in Port Douglas can you watch a platinum blond roller skate down the stairs or cook pasta whilst planning her lover’s demise (MissK)? Or maybe partake in an exercise of who done it as you watch the demise of a woman, hung in her youth, by a lynch mob with a pre-determined guilty verdict (“The Sins of Ellen Thomson”).

Giggle at the antics of a farmer determined to capture the heart of a young woman in an audacious swap of heavy machinery for love (“Farmer will Swap Combine Harvester for Wife”).

Be amused and informed of the history of the town and its birth which could appear to some to be “Too Good To Be True”(the Christopher Skase story),  then later wonder at the sanity of governmental bureaucracy gone too far as we investigate the towns Amalgamation with potentially inappropriate bed fellows!

All this is locally grown and locally performed.

And that’s not all! One week you could watch as the stage is full with musicians and instruments with a classic concert band playing good time favourites (i.e. The Cairns Concert Band) or you could be listening to original music with the dulcet tones of the likes of Matt and Sarah Kirsch, the beautiful talent of Danny Ross and the extraordinary flair of touring international artist Lior.

Also annually a group of local musicians perform a new story “Unplugged” and local talent is everywhere.

Amazing! Superb! World class! I here you say.

Well if you have been to any show in the last five years (or more) and was entertained then it’s time to immerse yourself in this exhilarating experience.

Join the Clink, become a member or better still join the committee. The Clink AGM will be held on 26 October and a new committee will be elected to maintain the integrity of the theatre.

Jump in and give your talent to the crew behind the scenes who make it all happen for you. At 6.30pm on Tuesday, 26 October we need you and your friends to join us because THE SHOW MUST GO ON!!
