Newest Aussies call Port home
Mayor Val Schier has welcomed more than 50 new Australians to the Cairns community.
The monthly ceremony saw new citizens pledge their commitment to Australia from 20 countries around the globe, including the Netherlands, Ukraine, Italy, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, Peru and Brazil.
Cr Schier said that the traditional ceremony marks the end of each new citizen’s migrant journey and is often a very emotional experience.
“It is a formal welcome to each and every new citizen on behalf of all other Australians,” Cr Schier said.
“It is also a day of committing to this country and taking on the responsibilities inherent in Australian citizenship.
“This is one of the world’s most diverse nations. Each and every one of our new Australians brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and cultural contribution to the wonderful multi-cultural society that we all enjoy.”
Edralina Lovelace and Guy Holder are two new Australians who call Port Douglas home.
Originally from the Philippines, Edralina has lived in Port Douglas for the past five years.
"I'm happy here and it's a nice country and has a good Government," she said. "I feel very happy. I feel like an Australian citizen already."
Guy has lived in Australia since moving from the U.K. in 2002, and like many from the motherland, won't be heading back.
"I've got no intention of going back to live in the U.K.," he said. "The ability to vote is important to me and I see a future here. There's lots of opportunities and I've made lots of friends here."
