Matt's big day out for the Muddies
by Mat Churchill
6 for 0 off 10. To those who don't follow cricket this means absolutely nothing, but for those who do they are individual bowling figures that will get people reaching for the record books.
But according to the man himself, Port Douglas Mudcrabs medium pacer Matt 'Powelly' Mitchell, his performance in last weekend's game against Rovers was not due to a rigourous training regime.
"I haven't trained for three weeks cause I have had to work" he said. "I was just trying to put it on a good spot and hope for the best." And the best is what he got, eclipsing his previous career high figures of 6 for 11.
The haul of wickets included four clean bowled, one caught, and one LBW, and ensured that Matt's line, metronomic in its consistency, will see him compared to the likes of Terry Alderman and Glen McGrath.
'Powelly' moved to Port Douglas from the Mornington Peninsula with no intention of pulling on the whites again.
"I came up here to play footy. I wasn't going to bring my cricket stuff but I got talked into playing and had to send it up" he said.
It has paid dividends for the team who take on North's at home in a big month of cricket ahead with the big double header this weekend. With the Port Douglas juniors playing on Saturday and the 2nds and 3rds playing on Sunday for the next couple weeks it is going to be huge for the small cricket club.
For the next two Sundays the Port Douglas 2nds will be playing North Cairns in the fourth round of the two day competition, followed by Rovers at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex.
On 19 December the one day competition starts up again and the Muddies 2nds will be hosting United Cricket Club which will be the first time the two teams have meet since last seasons two day grand final when Port Douglas were victorious.
The second part of the double header this Sunday and next is the 3rd grade team who are also playing at home against Mareeba. The 3rd grade game will commence at 8:30am on both days, with the 2nd grade game starting at 1pm.
The 3rd grade also have a one day game on 18 December at home against Innisfail.
As always refreshments from the canteen on hand, with a possible ladies day being organised for the coming weeks, so if you have the chance get on down and get yourself a hit of cricket!
