Firelight an artistic highlight

The Far North Queensland landscape is renowned for providing inspiration for the many artists that visit or reside here.

In the case of Scott Wilmot Bennett, it was a six week residency in the Undara Volcanic National Park that prompted him to create some stunning works that will hang in the Foyer Gallery in Atherton as part of his new exhibition 'Firelight'.

"The residency in Undara was an amazing experience," he said. "Most of the artwork at the exhibition will be for sale, and prints are also available."

Scott moved to Far North Queensland from Brisbane to take up painting full-time in late 2009, and has won numerous awards for his art, including a nomination in 2009 as a finalist in the prestigious Tattersall's Landscape Art Prize.

His career has evolved over the years as his attention has turned from coastal scenes to inland settings.

"I used to be interested in birds and animas and then got interested in landscapes. I also painted the odd portrait," Scott said.

'The Rainbow Gold' (pictured) is an example of the work which will be part of his exhibition.

"I found the tree while paddling the length of the One Hundred Mile Swamp (100 miles west of Cardwell) on my stand up paddle board.

"A Black Duck, nesting in the hollow, flew off loudly, leaving both of us startled by the encounter. The Gum was an amazing sight in the afternoon light, bent, burnt, broken and half drowned, yet blooming."

The exhibition, which runs from this Sunday until 26 November, displays paintings that were also shown at the recent four day festival, Opera In The Outback.

So why not take the short trip to Atherton this weekend to view Firelight and the works from this award winning artists.
