Cairns Regional Council Local Law officers will patrol off-limit swim zones at the Babinda Boulders following the introduction of a No Go Zone at the notorious Devil’s Pool.
 
Numerous warning signs are currently in place throughout the Babinda Boulders, including at the picnic area, walking tracks and at the Devil’s Pool lookout. The implementation of the “No Go Zone” will enable Council officers to enforce a request for swimmers to leave the Devil’s Pool.
 
Cairns Mayor Val Schier said the change would not impact locals and visitors who frequent the area and obey signage already in place.
 
“This change does not restrict access to the current approved swimming locations at the Boulders. It simply strengthens provisions already in place at this much loved recreation area,” Cr Schier said.
 
“There have been 17 deaths recorded at Devil’s Pool, with the most recent occurring in 2008. The aim of this No Go Zone is to prevent further incidents.
 
“Council officers regularly inspect the Boulders area for maintenance. This existing arrangement will be strengthened by a regular inspection by Local Laws officers.
 
“The Babinda Boulders is a very special destination within our region. The establishment of a No Go Zone over Devils Pool will enhance the area’s management and ensure its on-going sustainability. “
 
The No Go Zone includes the creek between the first viewing platform along the Devil’s Pool walk to the last viewing platform at Boulders Gorge Lookout.
