New twist for the Carnivale Street Parade

The Port Douglas Carnivale Street Parade organisers are excited to announce that The Spinnsters (aka The Spinn Sisters) – Hoopnatize and Lady Elle are going to entertain the crowds streetside as the parade circulates around The Macrossan Street route.

The Spinn Sisters are not your typical old maids by any stretch of the imagination. This dynamic duo is a high octane hoop troupe who get into a whirl of trouble whenever they’re together.

For the last 12 years the zany Hoopnatize has been burning up the stage from Victoria to the San Francisco Bay with a background in poi and fire twirling, while the loopy Lady Elle has been twirling about Japan for the last five years introducing the hoop to tiny tots from Okinawa to Hokkaido.  See them street-side at Port Douglas Carnivale 2010.  This year’s Carnivale’s street parade entertainment is set to soar with organisers releasing details about a massive line up of magic shows, barn dances and street performers.

Councilor Julia Leu said she was very happy to see how council funding for Carnivale was well utilized in the street parade.  “The parade is such a showcase of the diversity of our region’s talent and diversity, and its so well loved by both locals and tourists."

“As a free event on the Carnivale calendar, it is one of the biggest drawcards in the festival program for families, and its great to see some of the events funding we provide used to entertain people and bring them out into the streets of Port Douglas on the night.

This parade launches first weekend’s program and adds so much to the whole vibe of the festival of Carnivale, and with the additional entertainment line up details I’ve seen it promises to be the best yet.  I’d urge anyone thinking about entering the parade to have a go!” said Julia Leu.

Macrossan Street will be the major focus, with a large main stage where world class magicians will entertain.  Grant Street park will come alive with a chilled out stage area specially designed to enhance the acoustic, roots and blues of entertainers such as Simon Asquith.  Outside Rattle & Hum Restaurant, a high energy bush barn dance will take place headlined by the HillBillyGoats.

Carnivale organiser Ken Dobbs said people could expect a higher level of interaction with street performers this year. “We have arranged the format and the entertainment to encourage people to stay on the streets and they will be surrounded by world class entertainers and buskers.   For example, there’s a husband and wife from Melbourne who perform separately – Shirley Sunflower and Dave the Great – they spend most of their time in Europe and their act is amazing.  You can’t imagine people can think of these tricks, let alone do them.  You just have to see it,” he said.

The audience will be entertained by anyone from drummers and face painting fairies to roving circus acts, mimes, fire twirlers, musicians and even enchanted earthlings on giant bicycles.

Current street performers list is:
Shirlee Sunflower & Dave the Great, The Spinn Sisters, Danny Simony & Tanya Veld, Drum Up Big Drummers, Savidas, Moondog Blues, Strawberry Fundaes, Captain Smarty Pants, HillBillyGoats, Flameable Fire Tribe, Piers Freeman, Mixed Lollies, Hans Jurss and more…
