Port Douglas waterfront upgrade

By Roy Weavers

There is only just over two weeks left for Douglas Region residents to send their feedback to the Council regarding the Waterfront development.  As you know Cairns Regional Council has developed a proposal to upgrade Four Mile Beach (between Macrossan and Mowbray Streets).

This project is a part of the first stage of works as identified in the Port Douglas Waterfront Master plan.

The upgrade aims to improve pedestrian movement and safety, reduce roadside erosion in Macrossan Street, Mowbray Street and Jalunbu Park and improve drainage along the Esplanade.

Associated beautification works aim to enhance the character of the Port Douglas Esplanade.

The plan includes:

A landscaped entry with feature palms and low plantings at Macrossan Street, a shared zone with speed humps, and a pedestrian refuge at Garrick Street.
Relocate existing parking located in front of the Surf Club west along Mowbray Street and create a shared zone at the intersection.

Upgrade and extend the existing footpath on the corner of Mowbray Street.
Extend the existing footpath along Jalunbu Park to the Beach Access.
Formalise car parking along Mowbray Street to the front of Jalunbu Park and install a mid block pedestrian crossing.

To get the whole picture, you can view the plan artist impression Mowbray- Esplanade Port Douglas Waterfront Master plan.

So don't delay, the Council is interested in hearing from you in regards to this proposal.  Please provide your feedback by emailing feedback@cairns.qld.gov.au or contact Council on (07) 4044 3044 prior to Friday, 19 March 2010.
