Port Douglas Junior Netball Round up

By Treveen Page

Douglas Junior Netball Under 10s Mossman Primary and Port Dolphins played off at Port Courts last Tuesday.  Both teams played a great game and really put the effort in.

Mossman Primary won 10 goals to 1 but all the players did well on the court, there were outstanding performances from Sophie Kirk, Sophie O'Gorman-Petrack and Zoe Cambieras.

The little Dolphins continue to improve and showed some very promising form in the final quarter with Charlotte Dowling scoring her first goal of the season.  Amelia Lee played well in defence and Mia Cameron-Devine great in attack.

The Port Crocs played the T-Birds in a competitive game, both teams displayed a high standard of skill, for the T-Birds Lana Baxter and Ellie McKay played great all over the court.  Sasha Lowenstein-Jones had a standout 2nd quarter shooting 4 goals from 6 attempts.  Tiah McLean played well defensively intercepting many Crocs passes.  Aleesha Viola for the Crocs scored both goals in the 2nd quarter and Nicki Samson was impressive in all 4 quarters.  T-Birds won the game 6-2.

The Under 12s Crocs took on the Dragons (in their new purple/green singlets and lime green bibs!!).  The Crocs played well, the team tried really hard and it was a great game to watch.  Best players Freya Garde and Jessica Viola.  The Dragons under new coach Kirstey put in a great defensive game Taliesha James put in an excellent effort throughout the game and Courtney Day had some great intercepts as she becomes more confident in play.  Players choice for the Crocs goes to Kloee Revel and for the Dragons, Katie Gibson.  Final score Dragons 5 def Crocs 1 with goal shooters Georgia Duncan (4), Taliesah James (1), Lily Davies (1).

Saint Augustines played Miallo Thunder, Yasmin Stievano played a great game and the Saints team played a good attack and defensive game overall.  Player of the match goes to Marley Cairns who defended and shot very well.  The Thunder played really well against the older St. Augustines team, it took a while to settle down but they got within a respectable score.  Well done girls.  Player of the match went to Lilly Wicks for having a fantastic game.  Final score Saints 10 def Thunder 5.

Mossman Primary played Mossman High (with a handicap of 10), Mossman Primary played a strong defensive game which tested the Mossman High shooters, but the girls rallied and played great netball to take the game 12-5.  Shanice McLean and Tyler Mous for Mossman Primary were outstanding but the might of Chenoa Ryan and Grace Walker in the stronger Mossman High team pushed them to the limit, a great game by all.

The Under 14s representative squad were up against the Under 12s rep. squad in a practice match to test the girls for selection this Thursday to make the rep. team.  The Under 14s started with a handicap of 10 and were not allowed to throw high passes.  The 14s were in great form with Angela Pringle coming away with players choice and Natalie littler as best & fairest.  For the Under 12s Marley Cairns was player's choice and Tayler Durie best & fairest.  Final score 12-nil.

The Breakers (handicap 10) played Mossman High who also had Under 12 rep. contenders in the team, the Breakers started the 1st quarter with a 6 goal to nil lead, but the Mossman High girls rallied and shot 4 goals to the Breaker's 5 in the 3rd quarter.  Brydie Short was chosen as player's choice for the Breakers and Saisha Schonenberger for Mossman High.  Final score Breakers 9 def. Mossman High 6.

Douglas Netball will take an Under 14 and Under 12 team to Cairns this Sunday to play off against many other representative teams in the region, teams will be chosen this Thursday at training.  Good luck to all the players who have tried out.

This Sunday the Marlin Coast Netball President, Heather McLaren will be chosing state players in both age groups to form the Marlin Coast representative state squad.
