Douglas strong in Junior Netball comp

by Treveen Page

Douglas Junior Netball sent representative teams to compete in the under 12’s and under 14’s division of the Fowler's Group Marlin Coast Regional Carnival in Cairns last Sunday at the Smithfield YMCA.

Squads were selected from local players and each team competed in five games throughout the day.

The under 14’s combined well as a team against some talented opposition, which included three recently appointed Marlin Coast Academy players, coming away with three wins and two losses.

In under 12 netball action our girls put in a great effort against some very slick opposition, ending the day with one win, one draw and three losses.

Both Cairns’ teams took the honours over Innisfail in each age group.

The coach’s award for under 14’s went to Zara Ryan, a last minute inclusion who didn’t let borrowed runners and no socks stop her, and in the under 12’s it was Tayler Durie who excelled throughout the day.

To cap off a successful carnival, the presentation of the 2010 Marlin Coast Academy team was announced and Douglas player, Rhiannon Schreiber-Blattner, was rewarded for her hard work by making the team. The Academy team consists of the best young talent in our region, and through this program will learn all aspects of the sport at its highest level, in readiness for possible state selection.
