Cairns gets second Jobs Expo

Cairns will be hosting it's second Jobs Expo on Friday 25 June at the Cairns Showgrounds.  This second Jobs Expo will bring employers, recruitment agencies and training organisations together with local people who want to work and need a job.

Mr Turnour said the Jobs Expo in December generated around 400 jobs.

He said the Australian Government has recognised the challenges facing the Tropical North including the double digits unemployment figures, with Minister for Employment Julia Gillard announcing Cairns would host a second jobs expo during her visit to Cairns last month.

Member for Leichhardt Jim Turnour is pleased QANTAS will be attending the upcoming Jobs Expo at the Cairns Showgrounds next week.

“Interest from employers and training organisations to the Jobs Expo has been strong. The number of exhibitors is heading upwards and I’m delighted a major airline will have a presence at the Cairns Jobs Expo,” Mr Turnour said.

“I pushed the case with key Ministers to get the Jobs Expo to come back to Cairns.”

“Cairns is the only city in Australia to get a second expo so it is great to have major companies like QANTAS on board as well as many local operators.”

Mr Turnour said after a very difficult 18 months for the region, airlines were returning to Cairns and seat capacity was on the rise; a positive sign the Tropical North was rebuilding.

Mr Turnour said that economic conditions were still tough but there were some signs of optimism locally and some people were already starting to hire so it is an ideal time to host another jobs expo.

“This is a terrific chance for employers in Cairns to find the right people to employ in their business and I urge them to get involved.”
