Charity wins second Port Fun Run

by Josh McConnell

The second series of the Port Douglas Fun Run was held on Saturday 5th June and was again a huge success with a fantastic turnout of 50 participants.

There were 37 participants in the 5km race and 13 participants in the 10km race.

Scott Hudson was the first male across the line for the 5km run with a time of 22.28 minutes and the first female across the line was Liz Need with a time of 24.06 minutes. Alan Porteous was the first male across the line for the 10km run with a time of 41.09 minutes and Kaye Johnson was the first female across the line with a time of 45.46 minutes.

A special mention goes to Hugo Walker one of the youngest participants of 10 years who completed the 5km fun run in an awesome time of 27.35 minutes.  A special mention also goes to Liam Quinn and Grace Walker our other two young participants who completed the 5km fun run.

Also congratulations to The Sheraton Mirage who entered a team of 8 participants all decked out in their team shirts!  Now let’s see if we can get some other local resorts and businesses to do this as well for the next Fun Run as there will be team race competitions for the next Fun Run.

“This was a great turnout for the Port Douglas Fun Run and together we raised $740 for Running Pink – a supporter of The National Breast Cancer foundation.” Sarah McConnell said from Inspire Fitness the organiser of the Fun Run’s

“Nearly all participants who participated have beaten their personal best times from the previous Fun Run, one of the highest being Emma Mills who shaved off 9 minutes from her 10 kilometer run.  This is great to see – and is a good indication that participants are getting out there and exercising on a regular basis.” Mrs McConnell said.

Sarah also wanted to make mention of the great support she received from great local business including, Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas, Pure Massage & Beauty, Actin Fitness, Lorna Jane, Radio Port Douglas 107.1 FM, The FNQ Independent & The Gazette and of course Port douglas own The Newsport daily.  “With the help and support from these local businesses we were able to get the great turnout we did and we were also able to give away some great prizes to the winners as well as some random draw prizes for the runners”.

The next Port Douglas Fun Run will be held in September, which will lead up to the 14km Fun Run from Mossman to Port Douglas on November 30th this year with Deborah De Williams from Running Pink. www.runningpink.com.au
