A certain slant of light at Tanks

You're invited to celebrate our home in tropical Australia, through the eyes of Nanna Soderstrom, a European photographer whose truly unique perception shows another side to our everyday.

The exhibition, which runs from Friday, 18 June from 6pm, until 15 July at the Tanks Arts Centre in Edge Hill, contains photographic portraits of thoughts inspired by the Australian landscape and the tropical environment.

"I rarely try to take a traditional photograph," said Nanna. "Quite the contrary, I seem to disregard most photographic rules in my attempt to make my images look as I feel they should look, with colour and composition in balance, or out of balance, if needed."

Clearly passionate about her art, Nanna said "I believe I paint pictures, but with different tools. Light is my colour, the camera is my brush and the film is my canvas."

Nanna has been a keen photographer since 1991 and graduated in 1996. Since then she has had ten solo exhibitions and been involved in at least ten others with other artists.

Nanna first arrived in Australia in October 2008 with the notion of travelling around the country on a motorbike, taking photos for a future project. After visiting Port Douglas (where she met her husband to be, Nick) she rode to Melbourne where her motorbike was stolen, ending her journey. She returned to Port Douglas and has continued to create some astonishing images.

It's always refreshing to see someone else's perspective on the world around us, and with Nanna's often random subjects this is sure to be a thought provoking exhibition.

Oh, did we mention it's also free?
