Income Tax cuts from 1 July

As of yesterday, the third round of tax cuts will be delivered by the Federal Labor Government, putting money in the pay packets of workers, families and seniors.

“Electricity, car registration and rates are increasing, but the Federal Labor Government is providing some relief to workers by cutting taxes,” Federal Member for Leichhardt, Jim Turnour said.

“This is the third round of tax cuts in three years. The global recession has placed pressure on all budgets; federal, state and local, but it is important that the average person receives a bit of help.”

As a result of three years of tax cuts delivered by the Federal Labor Government:

·  A worker in Leichhardt earning $20,000 will pay $750 less in income tax in 2010-11;

· A worker in Leichhardt earning $50,000 will pay $1750 less in income tax in 2010-11; and

· A worker in Leichhardt earning $80,000 will pay $1550 less in income tax in 2010-11.

The tax free threshold has also been lifted, meaning low income workers which includes many who work part-time, will be able to earn up to $16,000 before paying income tax (up from $11,000 in 2007-08).

“Seniors will also benefit from some tax relief,” Mr Turnour said

The amount a senior Australian that is eligible for the Senior Australian Tax Offset (SATO) can earn before they pay income tax or the Medicare Levy has been increased.

The income threshold eligible senior Australians can earn tax free has increased from $29,867 to $30,685 for singles, and from $25,680 to $26,680 for each member of a couple.
