Netball results and news
With the 2010 Netball season more than half way through, teams are getting serious.
Senior Competition
It was a close first quarter in the game between Sugarland Shooters and the Julatten Jewels. A strong second term from Julatten gave them a good lead, but after the half time break it was Sugarland, with great shooting from both goalers, who came out firing and by the end of the third term only two points separated the sides. Julatten rallied with a great final quarter and won 37-27 with the best player on the night being Ebony McCartney.
In other results, Black Panthers held off Pink Panthers to win 21-19 in a close game with Emily Phillips starring. In a low scoring affair, with many turn-overs from both sides, Rattle N Hum defeated Quicksilver, 16-7 with Kasey Turnham having a great game in centre court with many intercepts, earning her best player honours.
Jets defeated Breakers 22-18 and Zara Ryan dominated, while the Cougars notched up another win for the season with a good showing from their shooters against Blood Orange winning 28-17. Brooke Banks starring on the night. Finally, the Crocs won by forfeit against Young Guns.
In other news, the AGM is being held at 6pm next Tuesday (3 August) and all teams are reminded that two players per team are required to attend.
Any players who are interested in playing against Cairns Saints on Saturday 14 August are invited to a training session this Saturday at 11am at the courts.
Last but not least, tickets for the 20th Reunion dinner are still available. Please contact Kelly Smith 0407 888 095 or Sharon Beechey at Beaches Cafe.
Junior Competitions
In the Under 10's, Mossman Primary played the T-Birds in a tightly contested game. Mossman shot three goals to two in the first quarter with Jasmine Kirk leading the ball towards goal and Sophie O'Gorman-Petrack confidently kept the momentum going for her team. For the T-Birds, Lana Baxter also put in a great attacking game and Sasha Lowenstein-Jones shot well for goal. Final scores were Mossman 10 defeated the T-Birds 8.
The Port Crocs played the Dolphins and the Crocs dominated throughout the game with great play by Nicky Samson and Phoenix Scott-Spackman. The Dolphins, although small in stature, stood tall against their opposition as Charlotte Dowling intercepted well in attack and Aleisha Hughes tried hard in all positions she played. Final scores were Crocs 9 defeated Dolphins 0.
Miallo Thunder played Mossman High and it was the Miallo girls who took it right up to the older Mossman High side. Madison Malone created play through intercepting well at centre, and Erin Kenna kept the pressure up as goal keeper. The Mossman High girls played with five players but still took the game, despite their opposition not giving them an inch. Halle Tesch played well and Brittany Bowen was great in attack. Final score Mossman High 16 defeated Thunder 11.
In the Under 12's, the Port Crocs played Saint Augustines, and the Saints girls played an awesome game with good passing and excellent defence. Yasmine Stievano was a standout performer. The Crocs could not compete against a barrage of five Saints goals in the second quarter with Lauren Radcliffe ever reliable around the court. Final scores were Saints 8 defeated the Crocs 3.
Mossman Primary played the Dragons. Holly Brown put in a great attacking game and Dominique Port was strong in defence. Although the Dragons came out firing, the Mossman girls rallied in the last half shooting four goals after a failing to score in the first half. The Dragons were tight all over the court coming away with the win with the final scores being Dragons 7 defeated Mossman 4.
A note to all players in the Under 12s, you need to arrive by 4.15 to play at 4.30.
In the Under 12s-16s, Team Blue played Team Black and it was the Blue team who started well with a four goal to one first half. Liana Pellegrinet was fantastic in defence and Jade Harold put in a great game. The Black team were down four goals to eight at three quarter time, but managed to come away with the win in a nail biter with Tayler Durie shooting five and Natalie stepping up in centre. Final scores were Team Black 9 defeated Team Blue 8.
Team Green played Team Red who were undermanned, however they continued to play well. The Red team with Breakers' players Gabrielle Houghton defending against Karina Pellegrinet made interesting netball. Zara Ryan put in a dominant centre performance using her natural ability to full advantage against Team Green player Rae Page. Final scores were Team Green 9 defeated Team Red 5.
