Funding boost for Far North
The Bligh Labor Government has approved $430,000 for projects aimed at boosting the economy of Far North Queensland.
Cook MP Jason O’Brien announced the funding, from the 2010-2014 Queensland Regional Development Initiative, which is designed to encourage economic growth, generate jobs and support local business in rural and remote areas.
“This funding is part of a commitment of $7.52 million over four years to fund the State’s regional development organisations,” he said.
“The Far North has received a very substantial amount in recognition of the difficult circumstances that the region is still facing,” he said.
Mr O’Brien said the Tablelands Futures Corporation would receive $75,000 to help develop a world-class mountain biking destination on the Tablelands.
The Atherton trail hub will be the first of several in the region and is expected to become a major attraction for the growing numbers of bike riders, walkers, runners, nature study groups and other tourists from Australia and overseas. It will also provide a venue for international and national sports events.
Mr O’Brien said a further $117,000 had been allocated to Advance Cairns for the creation of a mining and training services virtual hub, and they would also receive $38,000 for a project fostering business development for export readiness in the field of tropical expertise.
He also announced $100,000 each for two remote area boards – Cape York Sustainable Futures Inc. and Gulf Savannah Development Inc. “Cape York Sustainable Futures will use its $100,000 for a project to promote the Overland Telegraph Line as a self-drive and tour group attraction,” he said.
Newsport has contacted Mr O'Brien's office and will report on any funding for the Port Douglas hinterland.
