Feature - Port, impossible to leave!

Finding a true local, born and raised, in Port Douglas is somewhat of a challenge. A staggering majority of people who live here have come from outside the region, state, or even country and found it impossible to leave.

Over the coming weeks we'll meet some of the people who give Port Douglas a truly unique culture, people who've asked themselves 'Why go home?', and couldn't think of a reason.

And speaking of unique, we're kicking things of with Sally 'SuperSal' Streeter, a Pom who has become part of the local music landscape.

The Newsport: When did you move to Port Douglas?
Sally Streeter: 1999. I think it was the first of September to be presice.

NP: Where are you from originally? Describe it.
SS: South east London (Sydenham) the arse end of the world!

NP: What is your background and work history?
SS: Chef by trade, hospitality in general and a splash of retail.

NP: Did you come to Port as a tourist first?
SS: No, I flew in to Cairns when I migrated but I hated it so I went for a drive up the coast to Port Douglas and never left.

NP: How many times had you been to Port?
SS: Once and I’m still here.

NP: What made you decide to move here?
SS: Cairns sucked so it wasn’t hard.

NP: What do you do for work and recreation in Port?
SS: Advertising sales and of course hospitality. Recreation ummm I drink a lot!

NP: Are you involved in any community groups?
SS: Not really but I am one of the first to put my hand up to help out at events.

NP: How would you describe life in Port Douglas to friends and family back home?
SS: Much, much better. All my friends here smile all day long and laugh nonstop. I’m sure it’s the sunny weather that does that. I am very happy here and I'm lucky to have some AAWWWSSOOMME friends.

NP: Do you intend to stay here for good?
SS: That’s the plan so far but plans change, so I’ll never say never!

NP: What’s your favourite thing about Port Douglas?
SS: Favourite thing is the majority of locals are as friendly as can be, such cool people. The fact it’s always warm here, even when it rains its warm rain. The views everywhere you go are inspiring and there is a lot to do here even if you don’t have a lot of money, all you need is an imagination half the time.

NP: What’s your least favourite thing about Port Douglas?
SS: The long term locals s*&# me with their 'I’ve been here for 25 years'. It’s like everyone owes them a living but yet they don’t make you want to help or spend money with them due to their elitist sucky attitude. It’s not like it was in the 80’s, money doesn’t fall in your lap. You really have to earn it now.

NP: Thanks for your time SuperSal.
SS: Not a problem.
