Days of our River

Many thanks for our friends David and Tyna Whyte from Solar Whisper River cruises for sending this weeks Daintree River report.

Over the weekend the snakes got active and their river cruisers witnessed four different frogs escape close encounters by the skin of their teeth.

In the river, Dusty, one of the mature female crocodiles has been hanging around the outside of Pig Island a fair bit lately, probably seeing if Fat Albert, the big mature male croc who runs the show in this territory, is around.

Elizabeth, the mature female has been staying on the inside trying to avoid any unwanted attention. On Monday afternoon, however, she did go for a swim around her island and was incensed to find her rival Dusty there and it ended up as a cat fight.

Dusty is bigger and seemed to have the upper hand, but Elizabeth can't be taken too lightly.  This won't be the last tussle between the two 'ladies'.  The question they should be asking is Fat Albert really worth the effort.  He's a huge specimen and his attentions would ensure a continued strong gene line but he demonstrated last year he's not the most energetic of potential lovers!

Watch this space for updates in the ever-changing 'Days of our River'.  It's bound to get interesting when the younger mature males slip into town!
