Port Crocs embarrass Souths

by Pat Barnett

The Crocs went into Saturday’s game against South Cairns at the Croc Pit undermanned, but refreshed after last weekend’s bye.

With Evan Hocking, Dan Smith, Paul Minchington and Tom Eaderly all on representative duty, Sam Boxall out with a leg injury, Ben McCartney unavailable, and Matt Shaw busy catching a 21 pound rainbow trout on his honeymoon in New Zealand (I have been told they just don’t come that big!), spots in the seniors were hotly contested.

The Crocs looked to rectify their generally slow starts, and did so with a 10 goal first quarter.

From there the Crocs didn’t look back, and the only interest left in the game was whether a 200 point margin could be reached.

The final siren sounded putting an end to the massacre with the Crocs cruising to a 188 point win.

Final scores: Port Douglas 35.17.227 to South Cairns 6.3.39.

Best players: Stevie Lyons, Brennan Beal, Gareth Delany, Brad Cooper, Caydn Beetham.

Goal Kickers: D. Taylor 8, B. Cooper 6, C. SHAW 5, S. Lyons 3, K. Uebergang 3, J. Astill 2, T. Hanly 2, J. Brown 2, M. Nicholson , C. Beetham , D. Harris , C. Karpany

The Reserves also got off to a quick start sending Souths to the wall early. The team, heavily raided of talent to prop up the senior side, never looked like losing as every player fulfilled their role around the ground.

The highlight was the anticipated return to football of Jason “Harry” Wilkie, who played full forward kicking six goals for the day. His pace across the ground was evident, as was his physique after spending the last 18 months tirelessly working towards his self imposed “ideal weight”.

Final scores: Port Douglas 21.6.132 defeated South Cairns 4.7.31.

Best Players: K. Zammataro, A. Currie, B. Herbert, K. Andrews, K. Nyko

Goal Kickers: J. Wilkie 6, K. Nyko 5, J. Roennfeldt 3, K. Andrews 2, T. Gooding 2, P. Barnett , K. Zammataro, B. Herbert

This weekend the Crocs are at home again taking on North Cairns in a much anticipated encounter. The Tigers are coming off a win against Cobras and looking for a top four berth.
