Climate change ignored by marine operators
A large number of Queensland marine park tourism operators are ignoring climate change as a business issue, according to a recent survey.
Col McKenzie from the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators said that many operators just aren't prepared to deal with the effects of climate change.
"Any business that ignores the significant threat (from climate change) is doomed to failure," he said.
"Marine tourism businesses specifically, we know what the threat is and we need to bear that in mind in every decision that we take.
"If you just simply ignore the fact now, you're really dooming yourself to failure."
Attitudes towards climate change vary, but Mr McKenzie said their is a worrying number who have reasons not to take action.
"Whilst a significant number are prepared to take action, there's also a fairly significant number saying that they don't have enough information or it's going to be too costly to take action," he said.
"People felt that it was quite often someone else's responsibility to take some action.
"We have to deal with those perceptions and try and empower people to feel that they can get out there and do something meaningful."
The results of a survey of the tourism operators will be presented in Cairns this week at the 'Acclimatise Your Business' workshops, designed to look at changing weather patterns and how businesses can become carbon neutral.
