Australia on Chinese wants list

Tourism Australia will launch its new TV ad in China next month as it strives to convert strong interest in holidaying Down Under into firm bookings.

And early testing of the 'There's nothing like Australia' campaign in key cities has given the organisation a fillip that the new campaign could have the desired effect.

"Of those who have seen the new broadcast ad in Shanghai, 90% said they were more likely to travel to Australia," Managing Director Andrew McEvoy said.

The positive response will give further impetus to Tourism Australia which has already been buoyed by the Travel Intention Survey conducted by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).

The report revealed that more than half of the Chinese travellers polled intend to visit Australia over the next two years, making it top of the wish-list. "Since gaining Approved Destination Status (ADS) in 1999 the China travel market has grown exponentially for Australia to become one of our top five sources of international travellers," McEvoy said.

"Over the coming years we are doubling our investment in the market and working closely with our airline partners to ensure that we continue to grow the market further."

The launch of the new ad in China will be accompanied by the interactive map of Australia featuring 3,200 images and stories provided by Australians and translated into Chinese. Last month the government said it would invest $30 million to market Australia in China.
