Assistance for sporting and community groups

Not for profit sporting and community groups will receive a boost over the next six months through the Cairns Regional Council’s rates based financial assistance program.

Mayor Val Schier said that not for profit recreation, sporting and community groups would receive a total of more than $385,000 in rates rebates for the next half year (ending 31 December).

“The entire community benefits from Council’s assistance to these groups, as the rebate frees up money that allows clubs to improve services for the wider community,” Cr Schier said.

“Council’s Rates Based Financial Assistance policy allows for 50-100% rebate per year on rates, depending on the services offered by that club. If the club is used for junior development and is available to the general public it may receive a full rebate on rates.  A club that holds a liquor licence would receive less.”

Chair of the Finance Committee Cr Linda Cooper said community organisations are required to apply for the assistance under Council’s policy.

“Each application is required to meet policy criteria,” Cr Cooper said.

The overall total of $385,383.63 granted under the rebate scheme for the next rates term consists of $201,783.14 in general rates, $150,618.98 in sewerage charges and $32,981.51 for the Cairns Show Association.

All outstanding rates must be paid before assistance can be granted to a club or organisation.
