The New Years Eve firework displays at Anzac Park organised by the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce with the support of the local business community said goodbye to the 'naughties' in style and enthusiastically welcomed in the new decade.
Ken Dobbs, President of the Chamber said "The old decade was a pretty difficult one, with so much violence and so many financial problems around the world, that I think everyone decided to put that all behind them and optimistically welcome in the new decade. Let's hope it's a good one"
All the pubs and restaurants did a roaring trade throughout the evening with the families supporting the early display and the more determined party animals enjoying the midnight show.
Chamber President, Ken Dobbs confirmed that "The crowds were significantly bigger this year for the early display and felt it was a little bigger for the later display, certainly a lot younger than in previous years".
The heavy rain showers dampened the enthusiasm a little but luckily the main showers came just before and between the displays so the rain didn't ruin the actual firework displays put on by Xplosive art which were awesome as usual.
The rain probably cut the evening a little shorter than would have been with a drier night but the one thing that was for sure, everyone had a great night and although the police brought up quite a few extra police the evening leading up to the New Years celebrations went off with very little trouble.
The pubs contributed very positively to the evening by taking their responsibilities, as usual, for underage or excessive drinking very seriously, which allowed the early families as well as the main body of party revellers to enjoy a safe, secure and festive fun-filled atmosphere provided to them by the Port Douglas Chamber and supporting sponsors.
The Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce has asked us to convey their special thanks to all the sponsors who made the New Years Eve Firework displays possible with their generous support.
