Celebrate Australia Day 2010

Celebrate Australia Day 2010

Australia Day will be celebrated in style throughout the Cairns region, bringing the community together in an official ceremony in Cairns and festivities at the Cairns Esplanade, Trinity Beach, Babinda, Mossman and Port Douglas.

Along with millions across Australia Cairns Regional Council will celebrate the national day in a traditional Citizenship Ceremony at the Civic Theatre where Mayor Val Schier will present Australia Day Awards from 10:30am.

“Australia Day is an opportunity to celebrate our region and our country and to contemplate what it means to be Australian,” Cr Schier said. “Council encourages everyone to take part in some festivity with family, friends and neighbours.  This is an occasion to come together and enjoy the national day.”

Cairns Esplanade will be the scene for a free Australia Day Concert 4-9pm with local and national musical entertainment, amusement rides, a pet animal zoo for children and activities for all.

Cr Julia Leu will be making merry with a Family Day Picnic at the Douglas Sport Ground in Wharf St with activities for all ages and a best decorated bicycle contest.  The party begins at 9am, continuing until 4pm. Bar and canteen will be available with proceeds to local charities. And George Davis Park will be the site for Mossman’s celebration with Picnic in the Park to be held from 11:30am. Flag raising, games and prizes for the best Aussie costume along with entertainment will continue throughout the afternoon.

And don't forget to come along to the Court House Hotel on Saturday to make sure you have entered the free Newsport subscription draw for a chance to win $1,200 worth of beach goodies including a Windswell customised kiteboard plus lessons and a Seafolly swimwear voucher from Tshinta in port Douglas.  This draw is being made at The Court House Hotel on Australia Day at 10am and the winner will be advised via Newsport Newsmail out later that same day.
