Pubs and clubs opening hours reconsidered

By Roy Weavers

Cairns Regional Council has reviewed its approach to extended hours trading for pubs, clubs, restaurants and  purveyors of alcohol, despite the 12 month state government moratorium imposed in September last year.

Although liquor licenses are not granted by Council, local government can advise the Office for Liquor, Gaming and Racing on the appropriateness of applications.

Mayor Val Schier said that Council had decided the policy should reflect an appropriate location for extended hours permits to support the night time economy of tourist areas in the region.

“Council has reviewed the existing policy to ensure that it supports local economy by allowing premises to offer night time activities for tourists who have been out all day and want to relax by having a drink and a meal, go to a nightclub or shop for a bottle of wine,” Cr Schier said.

“It is best to strike a balance between supporting tourism and keeping the residential areas of town safe and quiet.  Most of the venues that already have extended hours are situated within an area in the CBD.”

The state government brought down a moratorium on all applications for extended hours permits beyond 12am.

“Under the moratorium, Council is not able to recommend that hours of trading be extended in places like Palm Cove or Port Douglas, but the liquor licensing division may consider applications in areas where some venues already have the permits.”

Council’s revised policy will serve as a guideline to comments that it offers on licensing applications and will designate an area where future applications for extended hours are considered to be appropriate. The policy will also include guiding principles for dealing with applications for gaming licenses and adult entertainment permits.

Those attending are invited to assemble at 11.30 outside the Port Douglas Community Hall for a 12 noon Departure.

The march route is along Macrossan Street to Anzac Park where some short addresses will be made by respected members of the community.
