Nothing trivial about Muddies fundraiser

The annual Port Douglas Muddies Trivia Quiz fundraising evening enjoyed a packed house at Plantation Resort last Friday night.

The fun started with a $5 'eat as much as you can' barbecue provided by sponsors IGA, Port Douglas.  Once everyone had had a great feed (mixed with sufficient cold beverages to ensure the brain cells were in tip top condition) it was time for the main attraction.

The quiz had been collated by publisher Roy Weavers from the Muddies main sponsor, The Newsport Daily.  The first three rounds saw some hectic brain teasers and plenty of guesswork but produced no clear leader at the mid evening interval.

Dave "OO" Evans had kindly agreed to be the celebrity auctioneer for the interval auction.

Special thanks should go to Ancura Fishing for donating a fantastic fishing trip on the reef, Port Douglas Jet Ski for a pair of ski trips, and Queensland and Australian internationals Jimmy Maher and Andy Bichel who had earlier in the day signed a Muddies shirt which fetched a healthy price from ardent sports memorabilia collector, Sammy 'Hollywood' Evans.

Roy Weavers also donated a limited edition 1948 'Invincibles' framed collage which he was delighted to see went for the highest price on the evening.

"OO" worked his magic and with his usual charm and just a hint of arm twisting generated the amazing sum of almost $1,100 from these four brilliant lots.

"OO" said after the auction "That was a great result for the club, I'm delighted to be part of it and help out. It's brilliant to see the Port Douglas Cricket Club getting stronger and stronger each year".

The second half of the Trivia Quiz then got under way and the teams pushed their little grey cells to the maximum.  Still, no clear leader was emerging.

Without a PA system, the MC duet of 'The Wevs' and The Newsport Daily's Josh McConnell were quite pleased to come to the end of having to  shout the questions throughout the contest.

Both MCs finishing with much huskier and sexier voices than they had started. Unfortunately those who know 'The Wevs' from his weekly rock show with Supersal will know that he has the perfect face and body for radio, so the husky voice only helped Josh's sex appeal on the night.

The evening then finished in controversy.

Due to an excess of lubrication for their throats, the MCs managed to total the final scores incorrectly, reminiscent of Australia's next Super Model finale.

Snafu, the mini superteam comprised of Juso, Scottie, Dion and Nicola were declared the winner only to have the title cruelly snatched from them by the Fork'n Spoon quartet on a count back due to the error with the Marathon double points fiasco.

Apologies and celebrations all round were the order of the day, but in any case the Muddies were the real winners on the night with a wonderful final total of over $2,000 raised.

Vice Presdient, Steve, 'Sir Don', Doble was thrilled when he said "A fantastic evening. Special thanks should go to the Muddies Social committee, Plantation Resort, Sea Temple Resort, IGA, Goodies, Barber-Q, Actin fitness, Ancura Fishing and Port Douglas Jet Ski Hire.  They have helped the club in so many ways.  This money is so vital for the club, thanks everyone and go the Muddies!"
