A double flying fox, a bamboo maze and a set of outdoor musical instruments are set to give school holiday fun in Mossman challenging new dimensions, at the recently completed all abilities playground.

Council constructed the playground in Bubu Kinkari (George Davis Park) in partnership with the Department of Communities. The facility is one of 16 created across the state as part of the State Government’s All Abilities Playground Project.

Division 10 Councillor Julia Leu said it was designed to be used by children of various abilities.

“This playground encourages inclusive play, leaving no child out. It includes a wide variety of exciting activities,” Cr Leu said.

“There is a wheel chair accessible carousel and some lovely sand and water spots.  The equipment is interspersed with tropical plantings, landscaping and showcases local children’s artwork.

“There is also a barbeque picnic area, giving an opportunity for families to have a meal together.

“All abilities playgrounds are about enabling participation in play for all children, regardless of their age or ability.

“I would like to thank community members and Council staff who participated in the design development.  Local tradesmen have done such a fabulous job building the facility, working round the clock to get the playground finished for the school holidays.”

Local mother of two, Shannon Garton who was making the most of the new facilities, says the new playground is a fantastic place for families in the region to spend quality time.

"What I really like about it is the safe surfaces. The old gravel base was a bit harsh for the kids. The fact it's fully fenced is good because it gives the kids the freedom to run around," she said. "It's going to be huge for tourism and it feels safe here too."

The $450,000 playground will be open to the public daily with an official opening event planned for early next year.
