Fear factor sees Africa riskiest trip

New Zealand has been named the safest destination in which to travel, but Africa is the place we fear most according to a survey of 700 travellers.

The survey, which was conducted by health fund group Bupa Australia, looked at what people perceived as the risks involved in travelling to a destination.

Almost half those surveyed said Africa was the riskiest proposition with a good chance of robbery, accident, and illness stated as the reasons.

South America was next on the list with 31 per cent, followed by South East Asia at 14 per cent, North America at 6 per cent and Europe at less than two per cent.

Far from being the biggest fear when travelling, a mid-air emergency trailed lost luggage and credit cards as the the worst thing that could happen when travelling.

Tell us what you think is the riskiest places to travel and why. And if you're up for a yarn we'd love to hear your favourite travel story.
