Business travel leads charge

Domestic travel numbers continue to be strong and is well above 2009 figures, according to Cairns Airport arrival figures.

131,826 passengers arrived in Cairns in November, 6,704 more than the same time last year.

And results from the National Visitor Survey are showing that all of the key indicator results have increased.

Domestic overnight travel is up 2.7%, the total number of visitor nights has increased 3.5%, and spending is also 1% up on 2009 levels.

And it seems that the positive results can be attributed mainly to growth in business travel with visitor nights up 20.7%.

These figures are being reflected in Port Douglas with Sheraton Mirage's Marian McLeod saying they have exceeded expectations in 2010.

"We're 2,500 room nights above budget for business groups and we're gearing up for a big 2011," she said.

The Sheraton Mirage are focussed on increasing their business night stays with their attendance at AIME, a meetings and events industry tradeshow being hosted in Melbourne for the Asia-Pacific region in February.

From an international perspective, 27,404 arrived in Cairns in November, a drop of 2,754 on October, but up nearly 8,000 on November 2009 figures.
