Waterfront committee makes a start

by Mat Churchill

The inaugural meeting of the Port Douglas Master Plan Advisory Committee was held at the Community Hall yesterday to discuss the future of the waterfront project.

Mayor Val Schier welcomed the 23 attendees who represented a wide range of council, environment, business and community groups.

Mayor Schier recognised the concerns of the Port Douglas community but gave her assurance of the balanced approach to the project.

"Port Douglas is a remarkable destination. It is the jewel in the crown of the area. This process is so inclusive and broad that we have a consensus in how to move forward."

The waterfront project has been touted "the most significant project in the history of Port Douglas.

Councillor Julia Leu said that, ten months after the initial report on the waterfront development was approved, it was time for action.

"The highest priority is the feasibility study of the lagoon pool project," she said.  "We've worked hard to get the budget, and to make sure there was significant community involvement.

"We need to get things done and get things started."

Councillor Leu added that the project wasn't solely focussed on the environment and the infrastructure as a whole.

"It's about wanting to live in this area. It's about how we interact with each other and how we have fun."

Mayor Schier echoed these sentiments. "Port Douglas needs to be refreshed to create a world class village consistent with the desires and aspirations of the community."

The lagoon pool is definitely a matter of high interest for The Newsport readers who participated in record numbers to have their say on the project.

150 people took part in the poll which asked 'Is a lagoon pool Port Douglas' highest priority?', of which 75% responded in the affirmative.
