Port Douglas Crocs tame the Tigers again
The Croc pit fired up once again on Saturday with both senior teams chomping at the bit for what was set up to be a hotly contested day for both grades.
With the Reserves it was a battle for second place with the remainder of the draw holding similar threats for both Norths and the Crocs, Saturday was the make or break for the second chance that the two top spots provide in the finals series.
Unfortunately it turned out to be a bit of an anticlimax as North Cairns Tigers struggled to field a team in which to mount an attack on Port's position. With an undermanned side being filled with extra Crocs players to put a full team on the ground for the Tigers, is was still a struggled all day for them against the depth of talent the Crocs have at the club.
All day long both Benny's (McCartney and Herbert) screamed around the ground and made the day extremely hard for Norths but it was the "Aged like a fine wine footy head" of Bryce Willis put his body on the line time and time again in the middle which helped secure the colossal win for the Crocs. 27.10.172 to 3.6.24.
The Seniors however, had a really slow start. With scores almost tied at the end of quarter time and Jimmy Astill out with a dislocated shoulder it looked like The Port Douglas Crocs might actually be tested and in for a fight. But after a bit of a rous from Coach Andy Viola at quarter time, it saw them return to the paddock with a greater enthusiasm to start shutting North Cairns down.
Matt Shaw was pivotal in the win, kicking 12 goals, a personal best for Matt since being at the club. Joel Lawler earned his spot in the team in a back pocket effectively shutting down most advances pressed by Norths and with Brad Cooper, Timmy Karpany and Dan Smith scooting around the ground it was no wonder the Port Douglas Crocs finished the day with a huge total of 22.11. 143 to 11.12. 78. and providing more frustration for Norths and it showed with how they conducted themselves.
This week the Port Douglas Crocs are off to Holloways Beach to take on the Cobras at their home turf and with only 4 games left in the home and away season things are certainly raising in tempo.
The Under 14s Crocs took on their greatest foes the Hawks once again last Sunday, but were unsuccessful in gaining a win. It was a tough game with the Hawks on ballers dominating the play and their talls over shadowing our Crocs in the bulk of the contest.
The Crocs had no bench so when Guy was injured in the second quarter the Hawks loaned the Crocs a player for the second half of the game. Final scores Crocs 0.8.8 Hawks 15.13.103. Awards - Aaron Marks, Charlie Williams, Jake Muia, Guy Phongunsthon, Jake Nelis, Shawn Pierce.
This weeks game against South Cairns is a do or die match to secure a place in the finals. Please check the website or with President Dave for the game time. Go the CROCS!!
