Newsport readers go Green

by Mat Churchill

The Newsport readers have given an early indication of how they will vote in this Saturday's election, and it's the Greens who stand to gain the most support.

According to The Newsport's latest poll "How will you vote on 21 August?", 47.4% of pollsters will vote Greens this Saturday.

The ALP came in next with 31.6% of the vote, followed by the LNP with 21.1%, while the Independents failed to register a vote.

Greens candidate, Neville St John-Wood said the tide is turning in support of Australia's third biggest party.

"People's attitudes are changing. More people are supporting the Greens because they've been let down so many times by the big parties on issues such as climate change."

The Greens have gained ground on the Labor and Liberal parties in previous elections, a trend Mr St John-Wood hopes will continue.

"Our main focus will be to get Larissa Waters from Brisbane into the Senate. It would be the first time a Queensland Greens candidate reached that position," he said.

While our TV screens have been bombarded with election advertising (which thankfully came to an end at midnight on Wednesday), the Green's budget meant that their advertising has been limited.

"We don't accept donations from corporate backers so we don't have the budget of the other parties," Mr St John-Wood said.

He encouraged voters to vote for The Greens to put pressure on the policy makers of the new government.
