New look for local cricket

There's a new look and and a new focus at the Port Douglas Cricket Club after the recent running of the club's AGM.

At the AGM on Tuesday night the new President, Vice President and Secretary  were nominated and voted in unanimously , with Bill Coulthard moving up from Vice President to President, Steve Doble as Vice President and Captain of the C Grade Seniors team and Sue Sorenson     as the new Secretary.

Steve Doble, the new Vice President said they are determined to lift the profile of the club throughout the region.

"With our B Grade team winning the grand final last year it's important that we recognise and build on that success. We are going to take a more professional approach to the way the club presents itself so it can be recognised as one of the area's premier clubs."

Mr Doble said it was time the senior members to take more responsibility for the ongoing success of the club.

"The association has administratively  been run by parents of the juniors. This has been a great service but now it's time for the seniors to step up."

Another focus for the club is to nurture and retain junior talent within the club as they grow older.

"Juniors and seniors have traditionally operated quite separately. However, one of the mandates to come out of the senior sub-committee meeting is to foster an environment where juniors and their parents are encouraged to stay with the club.

"We have some fantastic talent in our junior ranks and we want them to want to play for Port Douglas."

New Captain of the Club Nathan King, on behalf of the senior playing group, thanked the outgoing members of the committee for their work. "Rob Porter the former President and Helen Coulthard the former Secretary have both been fantastic supporters of the club, pulling it back into line a few years ago when it was about to fall over, and I know everyone here appreciated their efforts enormously ," he said.

Pre-season training is now underway for the seniors with sessions on Wednesday at 4.30pm, and Sunday at noon. These will change to Monday and Wednsday in early September, with the first game on the weekend of the 18th of September.
