Huge turnout for family day

The Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre held their Family Fun Day on Saturday, raising around $3,000 in much needed funding in the process.

Mowbray Street was a hive of activity as an estimated 2,000 people participated in the day and supported the much loved centre.

The familiar smell of the sausage sizzle, run by the local SES, lured people fresh from voting at the Community Hall (what is it about a cooked sausage that makes them so irresistible?) while hundreds of children descended on unsuspecting animals at the Australian Muster Experience petting zoo.

As always, Rainforest Habitat's presence was a big attraction, and there was non-stop singing, dancing, and gymnastics on display.

Local emergency service teams were also out in force to help with the day, while the Cairns Regional Council and ATOD's (Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs) provided information through their stalls.

Sarah McConnell and her son Ryan were among the crowds of people who attended the Family Fun Day.

"It's such a fantastic event. We've had a great day and met a lot of new people. It's a really relaxed and safe environment for the kids to play in," Sarah said.

Jenni Sorensen from the Neighbourhood Centre thanked Port Douglas residents for their support.

'We get great support from the community. We have four fundraisers a year and that helps to pay for parenting programs, family support programs, and play group," she said.
