Tour de Port shows Tour de Force

Last Saturday about 60 locals and their kids gathered at the Combined Club in Port Douglas for the inaugural Tour de Port which was organised by Lesley Stephens as a fundraising support ride for Autumn Cox, who lost part of her arm in a freak motor mower accident a few weeks ago.

The assembled participants were a mixed bag of dedicated cyclists, fitness enthusiasts and a whole array of fun riders across all ages from youngsters to people my age who really should know better but were wonderfully dedicated to the cause of helping to raise funds for Autumn and her family through this difficult time.

The 'race' started from the Combined Club at 10.30am on a course that went up the main street, along Port Douglas Road to the Sheraton Mirage roundabout and back to turn left down Wharf Street past the Port Douglas Sports ground returning once more to the Combined Club car park.

Entrants could ride this course once or as many times as they like and at their own pace, 'cos it wasn't really a race more a 'social cycle'.   In fact the Activ Fitness team led by Nick Carling, were the hardest workers.  When all other riders had slid back into the Combined Club for a well deserved cold beer/drink, they were still lapping the circuit (unconfirmed, but we think it was 5 laps), what a bunch of superfit 'show offs', well done Nick and his crew!

Autumn and Greg welcomed each and every rider back home to the Combined Club with a huge cheer for their efforts before being welcomed themselves as guests of honour at the after tour BBQ and live entertainment on the new Tin Shed balcony deck with all the 'athletes' and their family and friends.

Lesley reported to us this morning that over $10,000 was raised on the day, which is a fantastic result.

Editors Comments: A great fun day and another demonstration of the amazing community support for which Port Douglas and surrounding area is so famous.  Great job Lesley and her team for organising such a brilliant event and we wish Autumn and her family all the best for the future.
