Muddies net the awards at cricket Presentation

The Court House Hotel Port Douglas Mudcrabs took out three of the top honors at the Cairns Far North Cricket Association presentation night on Saturday 10th April held at Cazalys in Cairns.

Skipper Josh McConnell won Wicket Keeper of the Year Award with 23 regular season dismissals and paceman Dale 'Drago' Arnell won The Best Bowling Average award and the prestigious B Grade Player of the Year award.  The Muddies also, of course, picked up the premiership Shield for having won the tightly contested and rain affected Grand Final against United on first innings victory.

This was a fitting end to the season for the Muddies having also been Minor Premiership winners. Skipper Josh McConnell thanked the Umpires for their sterling service each weekend, the administrators for their tireless backroom work and sponsors, Commonwealth Bank for supporting the competition.

He said "It is a fact of life in both junior and senior organised sport these days that without good sponsors behind  them, clubs struggle to survive and we at Port Douglas are lucky to have incredible sponsors without whom Port Douglas cricket would not have come back from near closure just three seasons ago, to being able to win this trophy tonight.  So a very big thank you goes to The Court House Hotel, Mossman Butchering Company and Rattle and Hum Bar and Grill from all of us at The Muddies'.

McConnell also congratulated and thanked his team on the effort and commitment they had all shown to win through this season.  And he last but by no means least, also congratulated the Muddies very own 'Player of the Season', Dale 'Drago' Arnell for his amazing contribution to the team and wished him every success in the next phase of he and his families life down in Melbourne. He will be sorely missed.

The competition to defend the trophy starts again in September but training will commence at the end of July.  The intention is to again put out a team in both the B Grade and C Grade cricket comps for next season so new recruitment will play an essential role.
