Giant Sea Turtle off to Thursday Island

Elefantus Wrought Iron and Glass might be known for its life size baby elephant that stands in front of its Sheridan Street premises, but Thursday Islanders, and those that visit, will soon be admiring a range of artworks, including a giant turtle, fabricated especially for the island’s foreshore redevelopment.

Elefantus’ co-director, Fraser McCulloch said the giant sea turtle, along with recycled timber totem poles adorned with decorated steel icons and giant steel pearl shells had been fabricated in recent months following a commission by RPS (formerly Conics) - the landscape architects for the project.  The Giant Sea Turtle is 3.5m long and 3mtrs wide and is fabricated in steel and weighs 200 kilogram.

Those of you who have a copy of the latest edition of PORT DOUGLAS, the Free Visitors magazine will know that Newsport is a great supporter of 'Big Things'.  Our magazine feature on pages 38 and 39 entitled 'From Little Things Big Things Grow' illustrates the far north leg of an incredible journey being made by two modern day explorers Trish and Tracey (TNT) around Australia uncovering and documenting all these iconic tourist attractions for later publication.  Now it seems TNT's journey will have to be extended to take them to Thursday Island to check out Australia's latest 'Big Thing'.
