New app for Carnivale-goers

A new web app will help visitors to Port Douglas keep track of events during the 10 days of Carnivale.

The Carnivale Mobile App, which can be quickly and easily accessed on any internet-capable device, contains the full program of Carnivale in addition to maps and weather predictions.

It also contains a daily quiz and an option to translate the program into Chinese.

Carnivale Mobile App is a 'web app', and is essentially a web page that can be accessed from a shortcut on a smartphone or tablet.

These types of apps are different from 'native apps' such as games like Angry Birds, which must be downloaded before use.

Developer Chris Dahlberg said the app's simplicity would mean users could start accessing its information immediately instead of having to download it.

"There are only ultimately one or two images it needs to load, so anyone on 3G or Wi-Fi can have it up in a few seconds," Mr Dahlberg said.

"These days everyone has a smartphone in their pocket so it'll be faster and easier for them to use this instead of having the Carnivale paper program scrunched up in their pocket all the time."

Mr Dahlberg has developed similar apps for the previous four Carnivales, in addition to an app for people visiting far north Queensland to see the November 2012 solar eclipse.

Port Douglas Carnivale general manager Roy Weaver said the app was a 'great step forward' for the action-packed 2014 Carnivale.

"This year we will be printing 10,000 programs and while they are a fantastic resource, they will be snapped up fairly quickly," Mr Weavers said.

"By using this smart phone app, people will be able to source the latest information on events throughout the 10 days."

Mr Weavers said with almost 30 different events in the 2014 Carnivale schedule there was plenty to keep punters entertained.

"The first weekend we have loads of great family fun from the opening Street Parade to the Four Mile Beach Day and the Backyard Games on the Sunday," he said.

"During the week we have sport, theatre, music, comedy, which lead into the second weekend with some of Carnivale’s highlight events such as Palates of Port, Taste Port Douglas, Food, Wine and a Taste of Port and the Seafood Extravaganza."
