A carbon neutral Cape Tribulation home designed by a Port Douglas architect has been named House of the Year at the Far North Queensland Regional Architecture Awards.

Charles Wright developed the breathtaking six-bedroom home called 'Alkira' which sits on a man-made pond in the Daintree rainforest.

Mr Wright said the structure was inspired by owner, Rodney Perry's love of stamps and had requested a 'philatelic' theme to his home.

The project took five years to complete but Mr Wright said he was very proud of the finished product.

"It's quite an in depth process to deliver something like that," he said.

"It certainly wasn't easy to do but we're very happy with what we managed to deliver."

The stamp theme is reflected in the the indoor pool which resembles the shape of the 'One Pound Jimmy', one of Mr Perry's favourite stamps.

The home's six fingers allow light in through perforated port holes which create a look similar to a stamp's edges.

In addition to the creative design, Mr Wright said the house was environmentally friendly and totally reliant on renewable energy for power.

"There's no sewer up there so you have to treat all your waste and recycle the water," he said.

Mr Perry reportedly bought the 40 hectare plot in 2006 with water being pumped from a nearby creek to create the pond.

Mr Wright received the award - presented by the Australian Institute of Architects - in person last Friday at The Wharf Shed in Cairns.

"It's just fantastic to see the thing recognised for what it is which is just a great project," he said.

The jury praised Mr Wright's design as 'an extraordinary response to a very personal and adventurous brief' that managed to 'take its place in the world’s oldest and most pristine landscape.'

As for upcoming projects in the region, Mr Wright was coy about future works.

"There is a lot going on. I guess people will see [the new projects] in due course," he said.

Charles Wright Architects also won the Regional Project of the Year category for the Malanda Falls Visitors Centre.

"It was a great night. Obviously to pick up two awards was really satisfying," Mr Wright said.

Alkira is currently listed for sale with a $9 million asking price.
