Residents see red over traffic lights

About 60 people braved the rain on Wednesday morning to peacefully protest against the installation of traffic lights near the Woolworths development in Mossman.

As construction continued adjacent to the protest site on Front Street, campaigners waved handmade signs bearing slogans like, ‘Bad Signal’ and ‘Stop the traffic lights’.

Organisers and Council hailed the hastily planned event a success.

“To get 50-60 people at short notice, and then to get all the beeping from passing cars - it was a great show of support,” said Peter Wood, a Mossman resident and vocal opponent of the lights since their installation was announced last year.

“There was plenty of talk amongst those at the protest, and many who didn't know each other were talking. So I think there's a wide range of people who are not supporting these lights.”

“We don’t need traffic lights, we need aged care beds!” said one protester, “More money for pensioners.”

Mr Wood said he believes responsibility for resolution lies with the developer.

“David Kempton made it clear that it's the developer's choice with how they go ahead, but the Council and the local community are making it clear that they don't wish to have lights there. So the developer should listen. I think that's the next step.”

“My personal opinion is that there are other alternatives,” said Douglas Shire Councillor Bruce Clarke.

“One in particular is the original development approval, which did not have lights or a roundabout. Council is looking at that now, and if we could go back to that [original plan] - there would still need to be work done on the intersection, to get it up to standard and keep traffic controlled, but it wouldn't incorporate lights or a roundabout.”

“Let's not make the mistake of putting lights in here when there's no need for them,” Mr Wood argued.

“It'll just be a bad look for the town and people just love it the way it is.”

Mr Clarke said Council will meet with the Department of Main Roads and Transport and the developer this afternoon.
