CDRL launches drive to recruit referees for 2014

Cairns District Rugby League Referees Association has launched a recruitment drive to solve the problem of low numbers for 2014 junior and senior competitions across the region.

With trial and regular season games, along with rugby league carnivals, taking place between February and November, referee resources in Far North Queensland have been stretched like never before.

CDRL Referees Association spokesperson Pete Mackinnon said there was now a great opportunity for those with a love of rugby league to become an official.

“There are so many great things about refereeing, and I can’t recommend it enough for anyone who is considering it,” said Mr Mackinnon, the current CDRL Referee of the Year.

“You’ve got the best seat in the house, right in the middle of the action, and it’s great for your fitness.“You can also make good money refereeing junior and senior level games, and the travel is great.

“I’ve already been to Thursday Island, Bamaga, Mount Isa and Papua New Guinea to referee rugby league games, which have all been fantastic experiences.“You also have the opportunity to get involved with Intrust Super Cup and National Rugby League games.”

Mr Mackinnon said teenagers and adults, men and women, are encouraged to apply, and referees for all levels including junior and seniors are needed.

“There are no special qualities you need to have except from knowing the game,” said Mr Mackinnon.

“We have coaches that come and help with developing and improving people.

“It would also suit anyone that already currently referees Oztag or touch, or has done previously, while parents that have kids playing are also encouraged to show their interest.

"Any 13-20 year olds who are looking for extra cash and want to stay in the game might also like to become a referee, as well as recently retired players that can help with the seniors.”
