White’s Shed tender awarded

Cairns based contractor Richard Field Constructions has been awarded the tender for investigative works on White’s Shed.

The scope of works includes a structural inspection of White’s Shed, the permanent removal of concrete flooring and the temporary removal of timber flooring to allow for a thorough examination of the heritage listed building.

Cairns Regional Council Mayor Val Schier welcomed the vote by Council to accept the tender recommendation.

“The tender process is very rigorous to ensure we employ the best people for the job”, the Mayor said.

“After a long process of public consultation this is the first contract for physical works on the Entertainment Precinct site and marks an important milestone for a large and sophisticated building project”.

The White’s Shed investigation will establish the structural integrity of the building so that detailed plans can be drawn up for its refurbishment within the requirements of its heritage status.

White’s Shed was originally a sugar storage and handling facility built in the 1920s and is one of the few remaining structures of its time.

The $351,000 tender is expected to support 20 local jobs and work is expected to begin on site by mid March.
