Herald Sun to charge online readers

A report on The Age website yesterday has highlighted the popular Herald Sun's move to charging for its online content.

In a bid to seek new revenue streams in a period where advertising dollars are falling, the Rupert Murdoch owned news service will offer subscription only content along with some free information.

According to the report The Australian (also owned by News Ltd) which introduced a partial payment system for its online news in October has experienced a drop in visitation.

Although pricing is yet to be announced, it is expected to be introduced next month and supported by a multi-million dollar marketing campaign.

The Daily Telegraph is expected to be next in line for charging for online content.
